Multimedia

In addition to my investigative reporting, I was recently a multimedia producer for the PBS program, WIDE ANGLE during its 2009 season and for its special series, Women, War & Peace. I have produced multimedia for online publications since I was a volunteer for the Houston Independent Media Center. These selected projects are listed in sequential order.

PBS Wide Angle – Women, War & Peace (June 2010)

A distinguishing feature of the decades long conflict over resources in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is gender-based violence. Rape as a weapon of war is so widespread that U.N. special representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict Areas, Margot Wallstrom, calls DRC the “rape capital of the world.” Few attackers are held to account for their crimes. The U.N.H.C.R. Protection Officer for DRC, Christine Goyer, recently spoke to Women, War & Peace about efforts to reduce sexual assault in the camps where more than 1 million displaced women and their families live.

The Stabile Center website (Fall 2008)

I designed and produced the initial content for the homepage of the Toni Stabile Center for Investigative Journalism at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

Business of Detention (May 2008 – present)

This multimedia investigative project includes video, audio, an interactive timeline, graphics, and a 4-part 4000-word print story. It was nominated for a Webby and a SxSW Interactive Web Award. It won the Melvin Mencher Award for Superior Reporting and the James A. Wechsler Award for National Reporting. One of the videos was featured on the Mother Jones website, and the print story was updated and published in NACLA: Report on the Americas (PDF).

Meet Juan Crow: Arizona’s Disenfranchised Immigrant Voter (August 2008)

This multimedia investigative project features a long-form video, an interactive map, an audio slideshow, audio features, and an interactive list of sources. It was a produced during a fellowship with News21, a part of the Carnegie Corporation of New York and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation’s Initiative on the Future of Journalism.

The Urban Storyteller (Fall 2007)

I designed, managed and contributed multimedia reports to the Urban Storyteller website during my core reporting class in school. It was a collaborate effort of 18 reporters living in New York City and studying at the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism. The site presents slices of life from the boroughs of New York City, including coverage of crime, education and immigration issues.
